Reticulation

A repeated heating and cleaning process that allows fine silver within a piece of sterling silver sheet to come to the surface. When the piece is then heated the inside of the sheet (which has remained as sterling silver) melts and ripples up and creates amazing patterns in the fine silver on the surface. It’s an unpredictable process and there is a risk of holes forming. Each piece will always be unique as patterns cannot be recreated. For me this makes it magical and special and why I love to use this technique.

MATERIALS I USE

I work mostly with sterling silver and all larger pieces are hallmarked by the London Assay Office at Goldsmiths.

Occasionally I use Copper or Brass as an accent and sea glass to add colour and a change of texture.

A BIT ABOUT ME

I have been creating jewellery for over 7 years, ever since a major upheaval in my life gave me the opportunity and freedom to reassess my life and choose a different path.

My home is near sea and moorland, edged with people and seafaring history;  swirling water, craggy rocks, the wild space of moorlands all mix with human endeavours to inspire my creativity.

I love working with silver, its fluidity enabling me to create textured shapes through heat and hammer. Seeing solder flow is magical.  One of my absolute favourite processes is reticulation- cleaning silver of impurities, then applying high heat to melt the surface so that it bubbles and flows; like nature, each piece I create is unique – the patterns cannot be replicated.

Jewellery can speak to you at many levels. I never intended to do more than share my creations as gifts for family, friends and myself. Yet interest grew, others saw my work and wanted to buy and encouraged me to offer my work to a wider audience.
